160 Ecclesiastical chairs
20 x 20 x 10ft
A 20ft high tower built in the nave of Holy Trinity church, Jesmond; it evokes the tower of Babel, which appears in the Bible as a symbol of change: a turning point in history. This work asks viewers to consider the nature of the Church within both society and their own lives.
“I have a vivid memory of being eleven and seeing the chairs pushed to the sides of Holy Trinity and piled up for a church event. I had never imagined seeing the chairs and the space in any other way than in regimented rows in a solid institution.”
